This auction is for an original 8 by 10 inch silver gelatin photograph made by noted celebrity and newspaper photographer Arthur Fellig. This one is on heavy stock paper.

This item is in excellent condition, with sharp focus and good contrast. There is no photographer’s imprint or signature, however we guarantee authenticity of this item so bid with confidence.

THIS ITEM comes from the estate of Peter Martin who was a close friend of WEEGEE and was the publisher of several photo magazines during the early 1950s. Martin’s photo studio in the Greenwich Village section of New York City was a meeting place for many famous & aspiring photographers of the time.

Of course we could be wrong, but we don’t think that photo was made in Sammy’s, or on the Bowery, or in 1942…

RARE 1946 Original Photo ARTHUR F. WEEGEE Man Sleeps on Window
The Great WEEGEE !

A RARE, Vintage 1946 ORIGINAL Photograph taken by Weegee (1899-1968), one of the most famous of all photojournalist who was renowned for his stark black and white street photography. Weegee (the pseudonym of Arthur Fellig) worked in the Lower East Side of New York City as a press photographer during the 1930s and ’40s. He developed his signature style by following the city’s emergency services and documenting their activity. Much of his work depicted unflinchingly realistic scenes of urban life, crime, injury and death. Here Weegee captures a striking image of a man sleeping in a bank window near Times Square. This is a RARE and highly desirable period original issued by Acme Newspictures, the news service agency who employed the master photographer during ands shortly after the War years. Original press stamp and caption with date are on the reverse of this 7″ x 9″ photograph of with superb contrast and razor sharp clarity.

True vintage period works (those issued at the time) by Weegee and are highly sought after. This is an exceptional exemplar worthy of the finest of photographic galleries !

Of course wee could be wrong, but wee think this was one of a set of prints produced by Acme (obviously not printed by Weegee) and used to promote the book “Weegee’s People.”

“Beautiful original vintage silver gelatin photograph by the famous Weegee,measures 3×5 in.Here’s your chance to own a piece of photographic history.With Weegee stamp on verso.In good condition especially for it”s age and rarity.”

The photos with movie marquees were probably made in 1939, when “Allegheny Uprising” and “On Dress Parade” were released…

We think these photos were not made by “the famous Weegee.”

It’s interesting that every image of the backs of these prints is the same…
