Dog’s Barks Are Ignored, Couple Suffocates in Fire
Neighbors yesterday afternoon ignored frantic barking by Snappy, a Spitz… Soon after Snappy became quiet, smoke poured from the Mickells’ flat at 278 Ave. B. Firemen who answered an alarm found the couple and Snappy had been suffocated by smoke from a kerosene heater that exploded in the kitchen…
In the foreground, covered, is the body of Mickell. His faithful dog was at his side until the end. Mrs. Mickell’s body is in the bedroom.

Two-Alarm Fire at Greene and E. Third Sts., New York last night smoked up the street (left) so that even newspaper men were coughing… Spot (above), Dalmation coach dog that goes to all the fires with Hook and Ladder Co. 20, went to Greene St. He got so cold and wet that a Holmes patrolman wrapped him in a blanket and reporters took him home. The fire was in a paper bag company on the third floor.

Twenty Degree Weather at Greene and Fourth Sts., New York froze up the street, so that even photographers were freezing. NYU Business School (above) illustrates how NYU has taken over (parts of) NYC… Wee could be wrong about this location, but it appears that NYU has taken over Greene and Third Sts…

Zero Weather, Ice, and Wind Add Danger in Brooklyn Walk
Freezing weather and quirky numbers (and subway construction) hampered fotographer during a rephotographing project at 697 Union St., Brooklyn… No one was injured. (Although wee ran into a pair of colleagues, perhaps on their own Weegee walk…)

Shoe Sales Spurt On First Day of Rationing…
Store at 92 Third Ave. sells factory rejects and second-hand shoes, not affected by rationing. Most are bought by workingmen. Business doubled recently. (No, the customer isn’t La Guardia or Costello.)

Sales of Burgers Slow on Snowy Saturday…
Store at 92 Third Ave. sells burgers and stuff, perhaps affected by veganism… Most are bought by students and carnivores… (No, the customer isn’t La Guardia or Costello.)

(New York “tabloid,” “noir” photographer, known for his “stark”, “high contrast” images of “crime”, “death”, “night,” etc., etc.,… turns his “gritty” lens on the New York City WWII homefront, with this lightly amusing, slightly offbeat, and great photo…;-)

This is What They Saw
The body of Salvatore Sutera, 27, lies in front of 202 Mott St. where it was found at 4:45 PM Thursday. He had been shot in the mouth and was dead when police arived. Bloody footprints in the hallway indicated he had been shot there and staggered to the sidewalk… Weegee, our photographer, took this picture and then turned his camera on the watching crowd and got the picture printed on the preceding page.”

The doorway of 202 Mott St. as it was found at 6:45 PM Wednesday. The door had been shot in the handle. Muddy footprints indicated that it had been snowing yesterday. It was a door, had no police record, and had not been forcibly opened. Ceegee, our photographer, took the above pictures and then walked down the block, turned left on Delancey St. and then turned his camera on the watching crowd painting pictured above…
