Was this photo made by Weegee?
Hard to prove from the limited information on an eBay auction. Wonder what the provence is.
We are going to express our opinion: We don’t think the photo was “stamped by the artist,” it doesn’t appear to be in “excellent condition,” and we don’t think it was made in the “1930s”.
We are going to express our opinion: the photo was not made by Weegee…

If that “handsome man” in “New York city” looks familiar, perhaps that’s because the photo appeared on eBay before. In April 2013, photoshoot2012 sold a pair of, as we call them, “phony Weegee photos” for $199…
Weegee on eBay, June, 2015… (part 1) – “Weegee 1940’s silver Gelatin silver stamped “trumpet man”

“Weegee 1940’s silver Gelatin silver stamped “trumpet man””
Sold for $71.00
Seller was photoart50
Maybe the photo is a “silver Gelatin silver.”
Maybe the photo is stamped, by someone, not necessarily by Weegee.
The subject is not a “trumpet man,” he’s not playing the trumpet, perhaps a clarinet, and the subject is not “Architecture & Cityscape.”
“Weegee In great condition for its age and rarity” – is meaningless.

We are going to express our opinion: the photo was not made by Weegee… It’s a good example of a bad Weegee imitation… (Is this ignorance or fraud?)
A variant image appeared on eBay a few years ago. Surprisingly the images are in focus…

Weegee at the Whitney… (part 1)

Whitney Museum, June 3, 2015
(The blues… I love that Weegee and John Coltrane, and Elvin Jones, photos by Roy DeCarava, are in the same room… Except for behind-the-scenes of this blog, like right now – Africa Brass, 1961 – John Coltrane and Elvin Jones and Weegee are not often in the same room…)
The Whitney’s online catalog presents 36 Weegee photos… (At this moment, in our opinion, the Whitney’s online catalog is the most annoying and the most useless… Great new building, but not-great online catalog…)
MoMA’s online catalog for Weegee has about 25 photos… (At this moment – second place.)
And the Metropolitan’s online catalog has 92 objects, and the best of the three…
(To be continued…)
“I was lucky; the archivist found the photo in a moment…”
Great article called:
“How I traced my grandfather’s life from a famous photographer’s image”
by Charles R. Hale
Published on irishcentral.com on May 31, 2015.
Of course that famous photographer was Weegee.
The famous photographer’s photo was on page 73 of Naked City.
The PM page and page spread, published on March 8, 1942:

Street Scene: Last Rights After Fire
“Three persons died in a one-alarm fire at a tenement with out fire escapes at 239 W. 16th St. yesterday. Seven other persons were injured. On the street after the bodies were removed, Father G.J. Knoepfel, S.J., pronounced the last rites as ambulance doctor held his hat. Two of the dead were identified as Mrs. Betty Hasara, 22, and her daughter Lucille, 8 months. The other body was too badly burned for identification. Two men were rescued from ladders; two women carrying children jumped from second-floor windows. Police are investigating the fire, which apparently started on the first floor and swept through the roof. Flames were 40 feet high when firemen arrived. Other fires yesterday took two lives in Brooklyn.
