66 Years Ago Today… “A Pleasant Evening With Gertrude S. and Virgil T.”
Weegee Daily… May 7, 1944… Weegee Meets a Great Man…

PM Daily, May 7, 1944
Weegee meets a great man.
“Weegee brought in a photograph of an old man sitting on a cot, his hands in his lap. Weegee is the cigar-smoking, crime, fire, and seamy-side-of-life photographer who lives across the street from police headquarters and does his best work from midnight on.
“This is Stieglitz, Alfred Stieglitz,” said Weegee…
Stieglitz invited Weegee to his gallery. But first they stopped at a druggist’s, where the aged photographer left a prescription. Then they walked up to 509 Madison Ave. and took an elevator to the 17th floor…
“Stieglitz pointed to a phone near his cot. It never rings, he said. I have been deserted…”
“He was a failure, he told me,”…
…and he never used the products of Eastman Kodak because of their slogan You push a button. We’ll do the rest.
…And I left quietly and shut the the glass door with the words painted on it, AN AMERICAN PLACE.
“It doesn’t seem right that such a great artist should have such a little reward,” said Weegee.

Ceegee does not meet a great person.
Ceegee, an old man, opened a JPEG of a photograph of a newspaper that contained a photograph of an old man sitting on a cot…”

(Weegee or) Not Weegee…
Speaking of something smelling fishy… These photos (an incomplete gallery) were offered for sale on eBay in 2011; some sold… The seller had a different name(s),or aliases, not photoshoot2012, they were howardus and vintageexpertchristine… They were allegedly made by Weegee, or more accurately, a “Weegee Original Photograph.”
These are definitely not photographs made by Weegee…
Recent Auctions… Weegee or Not Weegee… on EBay…
Speaking of smelling fishy… more photos on eBay from photoshoot2012 allegedly by Weegee:

“Weegee Original Photographs 1940’s “His personal photo ” Row your boat ..”
4×4
Unsold. Asking price $75.00 (April 21, 2013)

“Weegee Original Photographs 1940’s ” Skiing”
4×4
Asking price: US $65.00 (The skiing photo was for sale at least six times in April – May, 2013)
Hey! The back of that photo looks familiar… of course, it’s the same as this one, the “Men in Uniform”:

Again: It’s often difficult to extract accurate information from an eBay listing, (especially listings as inarticulate and confusing as these), nevertheless, based on very little information and a few JPEGs, I think these are definitely not photos made by Weegee…
Something smells fishy…
Recent Auctions… Weegee or Not Weegee… on EBay…

From the listing: ““in great condition for its age and rarity ..weegee was one of a few who shot with a black back round .” – Whatever that means.
photoshoot2012 has been listing on eBay photographs that claim to be “Weegee Original Photographs.”
They even have a stamp on the backs… Wait a minute, let’s look closely at the backs… Below are screen shots of two different eBay listings, of two pairs of photos, and yet the backs are identical, the same image file was used… something smells fishy…
The “Weegee Original Photographs 1940’s Men in uniform” pair of photos is still for sale. The price has dropped precipitously, and then rebounded a bit… something still smells fishy…
It’s often difficult to extract accurate information from an eBay listing, (especially listings as inarticulate and confusing as these), nevertheless, based on very little information and a few JPEGs, I think these are definitely not photos made by Weegee…
